Everything you need to know about Montenegro’s Black Lake
Deep in the rugged wilderness of Montenegro’s Durmitor National Park lies a place of serene beauty and mystique: Black Lake, or Crno Jezero. This stunning glacial lake, surrounded by dense pine forests and towering peaks, offers a retreat into nature unlike any other.
Why “Black Lake”?
Despite its clear waters, Black Lake is named for the unique dark reflections created by the surrounding pine trees and deep shadows cast by the nearby mountains. On certain days, especially in overcast weather, the lake's surface takes on a deep, almost black hue, giving it an otherworldly, magical appearance that adds to its allure.
Location and Depth
Black Lake sits just a short hike from the mountain town of Žabljak, making it accessible on foot for travelers exploring the region.
For those arriving by car, there is no designated parking area, but visitors can park along the roadside leading to the lake. The road is closed to car traffic at a certain point, from which you’ll need to continue on foot. Entry tickets can be purchased here for 5 euros, and it’s best to bring cash, as card payments may not always be available.
The lake itself has two parts - Big Lake and Little Lake - connected by a narrow channel that may dry up by late summer, creating the appearance of two separate bodies of water. In spring or early summer, when melting snow fills the lakes, they reach their maximum depth and beauty, making June an ideal time for a visit.
The lake is at an elevation of about 1,416 meters (4,646 feet), with Big Lake reaching depths of up to 24 meters (79 feet). This depth, combined with the lake's crystal-clear water, creates a breathtaking view of shifting shades of blue and green that reflect the natural surroundings.

When to Visit: The Best Time to Explore Black Lake
In my opinion, the best time to visit Black Lake is in early June. During this month, the lake is full, surrounded by blooming wildflowers, and the air is fresh and invigorating. The vibrant greens of the forest contrast with the lake’s vivid colors, making it an absolute visual treat. As summer progresses, Montenegro’s intense heat causes the water level to drop, and by August or September, the lake may appear less full, sometimes giving it a very different look than what you see in pictures.
In autumn, the surrounding landscape takes on a different beauty, with a more faded and dry appearance as the heat of summer leaves its mark on the vegetation. While the scene may not have the vibrant colors seen in photos, the timeless charm of the place remains. For the lush, vibrant greenery that Montenegro is famous for, early summer is definitely the best time to visit!
Activities: Swimming, Hiking, and Mountain Trails
Visitors to Black Lake can enjoy various outdoor activities. Swimming is allowed, but keep in mind that the water, sourced from mountain glaciers, can be chilly even in summer! For those who prefer staying dry, a scenic 3.5 km trail circles the lake, offering stunning views from all angles and opportunities to encounter local wildlife.
Beyond the lake loop, Durmitor offers numerous mountain trails for longer and higher hikes, perfect for those who want to experience Montenegro’s dramatic mountain landscapes. The trails range in difficulty, with some paths taking you to impressive viewpoints overlooking valleys, forests, and peaks - a dream for any hiking enthusiast.

Where to eat, drink, and... maybe skip the public toilet at Black Lake
When you visit Black Lake, there are a few cafés and restaurants nearby where you can grab a drink or a bite to eat. It’s a great spot to relax and take in the view. However, if you’re looking for a bathroom, there’s a public one around – but here’s a friendly warning: it’s not exactly the most inviting. Trust me, unless you’re in urgent need, you might want to pass on that one! Instead, head to one of the local restaurants, grab a drink, and use their restroom in peace. You’ll be much better off!
Black Lake Natural Spring Water
One special aspect of Black Lake is the pure mountain water sourced from its natural springs. Known as “Black Lake Natural Spring Water,” this bottled water, originating from the Gusarevci spring, is prized for its clarity and mineral content. You can even find it exported to various countries. Picking up a bottle of this water is a way to savor a bit of Montenegro’s pristine environment - an ideal souvenir to take home or enjoy on a hike!
Black Lake is a must-see! Seriously, whether you're up for a hike, just want to chill, or simply take in the peaceful surroundings – this place has it all. And don't forget your camera, because every angle looks like it belongs on a postcard.
