Hiking, nature, and adventure in the mountains of Montenegro and Serbia

The mountains of Montenegro and Serbia are among the Balkans’ best-kept secrets. With breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and options for both relaxation and adventure, they’re perfect for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone looking to escape into the wild. Here’s everything you need to know about planning a trip to these stunning mountain regions.

Location and Access

Montenegro and Serbia are home to some of Europe’s most scenic mountain ranges. Montenegro’s mountains include Durmitor, Komovi, and Prokletije, while Serbia’s most famous peaks are found in the Tara, Kopaonik, and Zlatibor regions. Both countries are located in the Balkans, southeastern Europe, with easy access from nearby countries and major European cities.

  • Montenegro: The Durmitor Mountain Range is part of the Dinaric Alps, which extend across much of the Balkans. Known for its rugged and varied landscape, Durmitor features steep limestone peaks, glacial lakes, and deep canyons. The Komovi range, while less well-known, offers a quieter escape with its picturesque ridges and grassy slopes. The Prokletije Mountains, on the border with Albania, are sometimes referred to as the "Accursed Mountains," and are known for their dramatic peaks and untouched natural beauty. These mountain ranges are home to diverse wildlife, including wolves, brown bears, and rare species of birds.
  • Serbia: The Tara Mountain in Tara National Park is part of the Dinaric Alps and stands as one of Serbia's most scenic regions. Tara is known for its lush forests, deep ravines, and the iconic Drina River. The Kopaonik Mountains, often referred to as the "Switzerland of Serbia," offer a mix of skiing resorts and hiking trails. The Zlatibor region is characterized by rolling hills, wide valleys, and picturesque villages, making it an ideal destination for both adventure seekers and those looking for a relaxing retreat.

The mountains are easily accessible from nearby nations like Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Albania. With the growing popularity of these destinations, roads to the mountains are well-maintained, though some of the more remote areas may require off-road vehicles or a short hike to reach.

Most travelers arrive in Montenegro through Podgorica or Tivat Airports, which are well-connected to major European cities, while Serbia’s Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport serves as the primary gateway for international visitors. From the airports, you can travel to the mountains by car or bus, although renting a car offers the flexibility to explore these beautiful regions at your own pace. Montenegro's Žabljak and Serbia's Mitrovac are both starting points for exploring the respective national parks, and while public transportation is available, a car rental allows access to the more remote hiking trails.

+Tip: 🚗When planning your trip, especially if you’re heading into more mountainous areas, consider renting an SUV. While many roads are paved and well-maintained, some routes may require navigating rougher terrain. An SUV will make the drive much smoother and safer.

Also, it’s worth opting for a higher level of insurance coverage when renting. The roads can get narrow, and there are some off-road tracks where your vehicle might be at risk of damage. It’s always better to be prepared than to face unexpected costs later on.

What to Expect: Landscape and Terrain

Montenegro’s mountain ranges are known for dramatic peaks, deep canyons, and alpine lakes. The Durmitor region, a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts rugged terrain and glacial Black Lake. Komovi and Prokletije are wild and less frequented, ideal for more experienced hikers.

Serbia’s Tara National Park, on the other hand, offers lush forests, river gorges, and gentler trails. Kopaonik and Zlatibor provide beautiful, rolling landscapes with many family-friendly trails.

Outdoor Activities and Experiences

Looking for adventure or a peaceful getaway? The mountains in Montenegro and Serbia have something for everyone.

  • Hiking and Trekking: Both countries offer a network of trails for all levels. Durmitor’s Bobotov Kuk is Montenegro’s highest peak and a challenging yet rewarding hike. In Serbia, Tara’s Banjska Stena viewpoint offers panoramic views of the Drina River Canyon. What to Bring: For longer hikes, it's always a good idea to come prepared. Bringing energy-packed snacks, like dried fruits and nuts, will keep you going. If you want to enjoy a hot meal during your hike, a small portable stove and some basic cookware can be really useful.
  • Skiing and Snowboarding: Kopaonik in Serbia and Durmitor in Montenegro are popular ski resorts in the winter. Kopaonik is particularly known for family-friendly slopes, while Durmitor has more adventurous runs.
  • Rafting on the Tara River: For thrill-seekers, the Tara River offers one of Europe’s best white-water rafting experiences. Known as the "Tear of Europe" for its crystal-clear waters, the river runs through the Tara Canyon, which is one of the deepest canyons in Europe. This adrenaline-pumping adventure offers stunning views of rugged cliffs, waterfalls, and untouched wilderness. For rafting tours, it's worth checking out here.

Local Cuisine: What to Eat

Montenegrin and Serbian dishes are hearty, traditional, and often quite greasy – perfect for those who enjoy this type of food, especially after an active day outdoors.

  • Montenegro: Try kačamak, a rich potato and cheese dish, or čorba, a tasty stew perfect after a long hike. Another typical dish is Burek, a flaky pastry filled with meat, cheese, or vegetables—my personal favorite. It’s commonly eaten for breakfast or as a quick snack. Don’t miss the locally sourced honey and herbal teas that give a taste of the region’s wild nature.
  • Serbia: Sample komplet lepinja, a traditional bread filled with egg and cheese, or čevapi, grilled sausages that are a Balkan favorite. You can also try kajmak, a creamy, spreadable cheese usually served as a side dish with bread or meats. Serbia is also known for rakija, a strong fruit brandy often made from plums.

Traditional Serbian or Montenegrin dishes not your thing? Don’t worry!

With the increase in tourism, there are now more dining options available in popular mountain areas, including cafes and restaurants offering international and lighter fare. I was personally happy to find a few spots where I could enjoy other flavors too, but I must say, the grilled trout I had in both Serbia and Montenegro was absolutely delicious!

Many of the accommodations in both Montenegro and Serbia are near small shops or local markets, so if you're not staying in a hotel, you can easily grab any essentials you might need. It’s super convenient to pick up food for a quick meal or snacks before heading out on a hike!

Tips for Your Trip

Here are some handy tips to make the most of your mountain adventure:

  • Pack Layers: Mountain weather can be unpredictable, with temperatures dropping quickly in the evening, even in summer.
  • Bring Cash: Smaller towns and mountain areas may not accept cards everywhere, so having cash on hand is a good idea.
  • Stay Hydrated: While there are natural springs along many trails, always carry water, especially on longer hikes.
  • Wildlife Awareness: Respect local wildlife by keeping a safe distance and never feeding animals.
  • Trail Safety: Stick to marked trails, as some mountain areas are remote and have limited phone reception. If something happens and someone gets injured during the hike, don’t forget that the emergency number is 112. We got a message with this info before we headed out, just in case! Always good to be prepared!
  • Leave No Trace: It’s incredibly important to respect the environment. Bring along bags to pack out any waste, as there may not be trash bins along the trails. Carrying all waste back to a designated disposal site helps keep these beautiful places clean and protects the wildlife and the fragile ecosystems around you. It’s a simple step but makes a big difference in preserving these mountains for future adventurers.
  • Pro Tip: Consider buying a local SIM card for your trip. This will save you from high roaming charges and ensure you have reliable internet access, which can be super helpful for navigation, especially during hikes.
