What to Do in Budapest in January or February: A Friendly Guide for Winter Visitors

If you’re planning a trip to Budapest this January or February, you’re in for a treat. While the weather might be chilly, the city and its surroundings offer plenty of exciting activities to keep you warm and entertained. Here's a guide to help you make the most of your winter visit.

Getting Around: Apps and Options

For exploring Budapest efficiently, the BudapestGo app is a must-have. It provides real-time information for buses, trams, and metro services, making public transport a breeze. Alternatively, Google Maps works wonderfully for navigating the city.

If you prefer driving, renting a car can be a good choice for exploring areas outside Budapest. DiscoverCars is a reliable option for finding rental deals.

Dress Warmly: January Weather Tips

In Hungary, noticeable changes have been observed in the weather patterns over the years. While extended periods of heavy snowfall were once a regular feature of winter, snow now falls only sporadically and often melts within hours, especially in Budapest. January and February in Hungary are still cold months, so make sure to pack layers. A warm coat, thick socks, and sturdy boots are essentials, especially if you plan to spend time outdoors. Don’t forget gloves, scarves, and hats to stay cozy while exploring.

Outdoor Adventures for Families

If you’re traveling with kids, Budapest and its surroundings have fantastic outdoor options:

  • Budakeszi Wildlife Park: A short trip from Budapest, this park lets you see native wildlife up close.
  • Budapest Zoo: The zoo is a classic choice that provides an engaging day out for all ages.
  • Királyrét Forest Railway: Starting in Kismaros, this scenic ride is perfect for a day trip.

Another great destination is Dobogókő, which offers well-marked trails and cozy dining options, including street food and hearty cauldron dishes like stews, perfect for warming up after your hike.

Currency and Payments

Hungary uses the forint (HUF) as its primary currency. While some places accept euros, it’s best to carry forints for most transactions.

Credit cards are widely accepted, but having some cash on hand is always a good idea. Currency exchange offices are plentiful and easy to locate using Google Maps.

If you’re willing to travel further, I recommend the thermal baths in Hévíz for their healing waters. For a luxurious wellness experience, head to Sümeg, where you can enjoy spa treatments alongside horse-riding programs and explore the historic castle.
