1. Must-See Attractions

Old Town of Kotor

Kotor’s Old Town, with its historic walls and fortified structures, is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Old Town of Kotor, a well-preserved medieval town, is a maze of narrow streets, charming squares, and historic buildings.

The St. Tryphon's Cathedral, located in the northern part of the old town, is a must-see. This Roman Catholic cathedral, dating back to the 12th century, is one of Kotor's most iconic landmarks. The Old Town's fortified walls provide panoramic views of the bay and are perfect for a leisurely stroll.

At the entrance to the Old Town, you'll find a bustling market where you can buy homemade cheeses, smoked ham, fresh fruits, and other local delicacies.

St. John’s Fortress and Our Lady of Remedy Church

For those up for a challenge, the hike up to St. John’s Fortress and the Our Lady of Remedy Church is a must. The ascent involves climbing approximately 1,350 steps and takes about two hours for the round trip. Comfortable shoes are essential, and it’s best to avoid the climb during the peak midday heat. The panoramic views from the top are worth the effort.

Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks

Perast, a picturesque town near Kotor, is known for its Baroque architecture and serene atmosphere. A short boat trip from Perast will take you to Our Lady of the Rocks, an island with a church and museum. The island is famous for its votive paintings and panoramic views.

Sveti Stefan

A small island operating as a luxury hotel, Sveti Stefan is near Budva and is renowned for its beautiful beaches and exclusive accommodations. Although the island is not open to the public unless you're a guest, you can enjoy the view from the mainland and relax on the nearby beaches.

Lovćen National Park

Featuring impressive mountainous landscapes and the Njegoš Mausoleum, this park is located south of the Bay of Kotor. The mausoleum is the final resting place of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, a beloved Montenegrin ruler and poet. The park offers numerous hiking trails and stunning views of the surrounding mountains and coastline.

Blue Cave

The Blue Cave, near Herceg Novi, is renowned for its vibrant blue light. The cave is accessible by boat, and the best time to visit is around midday when sunlight creates the most striking blue effect. It's a popular spot for swimming and snorkeling.

2. Getting Around

Traveling by car is the most convenient way to explore the Bay of Kotor, especially since some attractions, like ancient monasteries on mountaintops, can only be reached by car. However, be aware that parking in the center is limited. A new parking area has been built recently, but it fills up quickly. Traffic jams are common in the center, especially at roundabouts, so it's best to start your day early.

For car rentals, the site I personally use is DiscoverCars. In my opinion, it’s one of the best and most convenient platforms to quickly and easily find a car that suits both my needs and my budget.

If you're coming to Kotor Bay from Podgorica Airport, I recommend checking out the following options: Car rental from Podgorica

Serpentine Roads - Don't miss out!

The serpentine roads around the Bay of Kotor offer stunning views both from the road and the mountaintop. They can be tricky for those with a fear of heights, but the views are absolutely worth it!

3. Cuisine and Drinks

Montenegrin cuisine is simple yet flavorful. In the Bay of Kotor, you can enjoy Mediterranean dishes, including pizza and seafood. Some popular dishes include:

  • Ćevapčići: Small grilled sausages.
  • Pljeskavica: Grilled meat patties.
  • Burek: Filled pastry with various fillings (meat, cheese, spinach).
  • Njeguški pršut: Traditional smoked ham.
  • Nikšićko Pivo: Local beer.

My favorite restaurant in the area: BBQ Tanjga

Local wines and rakija (brandy) are must-tries. Montenegro also boasts a strong coffee culture, with cafes serving robust espressos. In the Bay of Kotor, you can find a variety of restaurants and cafes, many of which offer stunning views of the bay.

4. Accommodation Options

Montenegro offers a range of accommodation options, especially around the Bay of Kotor. We tried several Airbnb accommodations and apartments, all of which we can recommend. We encountered friendly hosts and stayed in clean, well-maintained rooms and apartments equipped with air conditioning and terraces overlooking the bay.

  • Plavi Horizonti: A sandy beach near Tivat.

6. Hiking and Outdoor Adventures

Kotor Bay is not just about picturesque towns and serene waters; it also offers a plethora of hiking and outdoor adventures for those looking to explore the natural beauty of the region. Here are some of the best hiking trails and outdoor activities you can enjoy in and around Kotor Bay:

Ladder of Kotor (Kotor’s Serpentine Road)

This challenging hike starts from the Old Town of Kotor and ascends the steep mountain via a series of switchbacks. Known locally as the Ladder of Kotor, this trail offers spectacular views of the bay and the town below. The hike can be strenuous, so it's best to start early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Don't forget to bring plenty of water and wear sturdy hiking shoes.

Vrmac Ridge Trail

The Vrmac Ridge trail connects Kotor with Tivat and provides a less strenuous option for hikers while still offering stunning views of both Kotor Bay and Tivat Bay. The trail is well-marked and can be completed in a few hours. It’s a great way to experience the natural beauty of the region without the intense climb of the Ladder of Kotor.

Lovćen National Park

A short drive from Kotor Bay, Lovćen National Park is home to some of Montenegro's most beautiful landscapes. The park offers a variety of hiking trails suitable for all levels of fitness. The most popular hike is to the Njegoš Mausoleum, perched atop the second highest peak in the park. The views from the top are breathtaking and well worth the effort.

In the Bay of Kotor, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to pick up unique souvenirs, such as local wines, olive oil, and honey.

8. Additional Tips for Kotor

In the port of Kotor, you'll often see giant cruise ships anchored, adding to the bustling maritime atmosphere.

Along the coast, there are scenic pedestrian streets where you can take a leisurely stroll. These areas are restricted to local traffic or guests staying at nearby accommodations with dedicated parking spots.

While walking, especially in the evening, be mindful of your steps. There are drainage channels with missing covers in some areas, posing a risk of injury if you accidentally step into one.
